Another Set of Freezing Fingers

When you are away from home you've got to take the chances that arise. The family party were all well occupied in hitting beaches, local shops and little museums so I took myself to a favourite spot to take in the view. It is one of the most photographed, drawn and painted views in the North East of England but it never fails to thrill. Unfortunately the old wind chill made it a less than comfortable experience and I found myself having some difficulty making accurate marks. Never mind more fun was had.

Can feel the chilly wind in the painting Mick. Like the way the water is washing up on the beach and the overall simplicity of the painting. My Pocket Box arrived yesterday, hope my paintings improve!

Nice little painting Mick but with everything on the right side. Would it be better with something to balance it over on the left? Quite how you'd achieve that given the view I'm not sure.

Ray - Thanks. The box will definitely improve things. You must be having lots of fun choosing your palette and loading the box.

Peter - Cheers. You're right of course but short of beaching a whale or waylaying an oil tanker you can't get anything in at the necessary point.

Hi Mick you could try creating an interesting sky on the left side of the painting to balance the painting having so much on the far right of the scene. You could also have moved the castle over more to the middle of the scene, artistic license is always useful. A boat on the shore perhaps, maybe birds or dogs too. I think you have painted the scene very well in a nice fresh delicate way which is very lovely when using the watercolour medium. So glad you got out there Mick. Good work well done.

Caroline - Thank you so much for the sensible list of possibilities to improve the composition. You are absolutely right about the sky I have other paintings of the same scene with more interesting skies but the day I did this the light was flat and sky uninteresting. I did think of a few people on the beach but for some reason I have something of a reserve about including them in my pictures. There's something for the head doctors to explore.
