Across Ullswater

A couple of posts ago I was looking at the green mixing problem and having gained a little confidence from the experimentation I decided to have a go in the fresh air. We spend little bits of time over in the Lake District and it's always a delight to get out in the fresh air in that wonderful part of the world.

We stay near Ullswater and there are so many stunning views along it that it's often difficult to choose a spot to paint from. This view can be seen towards the head of the Lake.

The green mixes are combinations of Ultramarine and Cerulean Blues with Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow and Yellow Ochre. I found it helpful to make my mixes prior to beginning the application of paint. his gave me the opportunity to compare them on the palette board and speeded up the actual laying on of the paint.

I love the pale colors Mick. All nearly the same values, they give the painting an abstract quality. I also admire that you were out there painting with oils. That makes you a hero in my book. I have yet to bite that bullet. Maybe with pastels, after that class I'm taking--not as much stuff to tote about--so I think?

The greens are very subtle Mick, it doesn't shout GREEN painting. Nicely done. I have a problem with the foreground dividing the painting but have no idea how to change it, and really am not so sure it needs changing. That water looks cold.

Hello Mick:) Beautiful greens! I always love the mixing to get different greens. You did a great job!

AS you know I think the oils are your forte Mick. Nice painting of a difficult subject.

Linda - Thanks. You should make the effort to get out with your gear, it's much more fun than working inside and the challenge of capturing light in changing conditions can only be good for the observation skills. You also have to strip the gear down to manageable proportions.

Ray - Thanks. Pleased you like the effort with the greens. There's not a lot I could do about the water line other than move it up or down the composition and it would still cut the picture at that point. The inclusion of the water is necessary to give a sense of place.

Renate - Thanks very much. I've been giving the green mixing a bit of attention recently and am making a little progress.

Yes, the battle with green! Good job tackling it. Looks like you've figured it out.
Happy Painting.

Nora - Thanks. Green is probably the biggest struggle for me but as always practice improves things.
