Working from Sketches

When travelling, I make sketches and notes and some may remember I posted some pages from my watercolour sketch book on my return from Venice. One of the sketches was of this interesting church in Cannaregio.

I decided it was about time I tried to work something up from that sketch. The result is here. I did try to retain some of the freshness of the sketch but pay a little more regard to the value relationships. I'm not sure I've got those quite right as some of the shadows aren't strong enough. However, it still has some feeling of light so I can't complain too much.

You have caught the light very well Mick. Perhaps the tone of the water in shadow could be a little deeper.

Very nice! It's so interesting doing white buildings in watercolor, isn't it? I am working on one now and it is great fun.

Ray - I agree those shadows could be deeper.

Dan - You're right white buildings, strong light provide interesting challenges for the watercolourist.

Very nice Mick. Bit more contrast, (and possibly stronger colours in a few places, perhaps?

A beautiful painting Mick, full of light. Good to be able to see your painting of Venice. I hope you had a lovely holiday.

Peter - Thanks. Agreed, more contrast required but we impoverished denizens of the extremities of HM's kingdom haven't got the resources to acquire anything but a limited palette.

Caroline - How good to hear from you. I've missed your posts and spotted somewhere that you have been having technology problems. Hope this means you'll be posting again soon.

Impoverished denizens! I was beginning to think you must have won the lottery with all your gadding about. Get buying a few Daniel Smith or Graham paints.
